For the past 35 years, W. Arthur Barrett, II, P.E., has made significant contributions to the civil engineering industry. Both his leadership and experience earned him the 2015 Civil Engineer of the Year award from the Maryland Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Located in the Baltimore, Maryland, office, Barrett is a Gannett Fleming senior vice president and director of the firm’s Mid-Atlantic Region. A veteran civil engineer, Barrett oversees employees in seven offices in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia. In addition, he serves as a senior transportation project manager, managing highway and transit projects; structural/condition inspections; and the structural design of bridges, buildings, drainage structures, and tanks. A graduate of Clarkson University, Barrett holds a B.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Joel G. Carson has been selected to serve as executive director of the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA), succeeding John P. Bachner. Bachner’s firm – Bachner Communications, Inc. – has managed GBA since May 1973; Bachner has served as GBA’s chief of staff during that span. GBA will become a fully self-managed entity in November 2015. Carson will be tasked with assembling the new management team that he will lead to achieve GBA’s long-term strategic vision.
Laura R. Reinbold, P.E. is the new president-elect of the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA), succeeding Joel G. Carson, who resigned the position after being chosen to serve as GBA’s executive director. Ms. Reinbold is a director of client development for Terracon, a consulting-engineering firm providing environmental, facilities, geotechnical, and materials services from 150 offices nationwide.
Charles L. “Charlie” Head, P.E., P.G. has been named GBA’s new secretary/treasurer, filling the position Ms. Reinbold vacated. Mr. Head is CEO of Sanborn, Head & Associates, Inc., a multidisciplinary, New Hampshire-based firm serving industry, development, solid-waste, and energy clients nationally and internationally.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has selected Janeen Judah, General Manager for Chevron’s Southern Africa Business Unit, as 2017 president of the international professional society. Judah, who is based in Houston, Texas, will take office as president-elect on 30 September 2015 at the close of SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition in Houston, Texas USA.

Dr. Justin Schwartz, head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow of ASM International. He earned a B.S. in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1985 and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990.
Elizabeth Parry of The Engineering Place, a K-20 engineering education and outreach program at North Carolina State University, recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) in Washington, D.C. Parry has worked in The Engineering Place since 1999. She is a former manager at IBM who earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering management/mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 1983.
